Chapter 23

Maddy flattened herself against the shop shelves as a staff member squeezed past, outfitted in fishnet tights and pink mesh gloves. She must have been freezing.

The fluorescent lights above her were flickering, bouncing off the box of hair bleach in her hand. She sent them a baleful glare, replacing the bleach back on the shelf.

‘So the Chloe thing isn’t working?’ Phil asked from beside her, fingering a tub of coral hair dye.

‘Not really.’

Phil pursed his lips. They were bright magenta today and satiny like he’d just eaten greasy fish and chips. ‘Well, someone else then?’

Maddy sighed, plucking a cheaper box of hair bleach and a tub of blue dye. ‘No Phil. No one else.’

They walked down the aisle rammed with brightly coloured alternative beauty items. The only other customers in here were college kids like them.

‘I think they’ve had sex. Her and Elise,’ Maddy said.

‘Probably. They’ve been together a while now.’

Maddy clamped her jaw against the urge to scream in his face. How did no one get how much this was messing her up? Elise had told her about the cottage in the woods, the one they used to make up stories about. Tainted, now. She hoped to never walk past the damn place again.

‘Sure you wanna dye it blue?’

Maddy glanced at the tub in her hand. ‘Why not? If I hate it, I’ll dye it out again.’

‘You’re gonna fuck your hair up.’

‘It’s already fucked.’ She tugged at a strand. It was so dry and teased to hell and back that it just stayed there until she smoothed it back down again. As they walked to the till, she eyed the cubicles where they pierced people. ‘I wanna get my bellybutton pierced.’

‘What—now? We have to go back in ten.’

‘You can go back, I’m getting my belly button pierced. Here, buy this for me. I’ll pay you back.’ Maddy thrust her items into Phil’s hands.

‘What? But—dude, come on. Let’s go to Photography first. We can come back after.’

Maddy waved him off. ‘Nah. I’ll see you later.’

She caught the eye of a piercing technician and stalked over to him. Ten minutes later, she’d filled out her little form and was being led into one of the cubicles. It was tiny, only room enough for a bed and a narrow ledge where the piercing equipment was kept.

Maddy laid down and pulled up her top when directed. She eyed the ceiling, waiting for that stab of pain. When it was done, she glanced down. The belly bar was blue, as blue as Cerulean’s eyes and Maddy immediately regretted the choice. She’d buy another and change it when she got home and pray nothing got infected.

She didn’t go to Photography in the end. She wandered through town and towards a shopping precinct which held furniture and electronics shops. In the corner beside a Starbucks was a large pet shop. Maddy walked towards it, suddenly inspired.

Inside stank of hay and dog kibble. Maddy headed for the pet adoption centre in the middle and pressed her face close to the tanks, trying to spy the tiny rodents.
